After 24 days of shooting over a 2-year period from 2024 to 2026, I am proud to say that we FINALLY have a trailer for this strange and bizarre new feature film called My Shadow.
I have written about the production process before, but this is a bit different, because I now have the ability to really demonstrate the vision of what I hope this movie will feel like when it is watched.
Trailers are tricky and unpredictable in a certain sense because if they communicate too much, especially of the plot, then they risk running crossing a boundary that lets a viewer feel as if they have already “seen” the movie in the trailer itself. Sometimes that is my experience as a passionate moviegoer.
It has gotten to a point where I prefer to avoid a trailer - especially if it is the SECOND or (even worse) the THIRD trailer. Both of which are so very often guilty of spoiling the fun of watching something for the first time.
Some people want that from a trailer. They want to know everything that is being promised, because ultimately, a trailer is a promise. Just as it is a promise that if a theater is going to run a trailer, it means they are going to run the film when it is released. Sadly, that is not the case these days…
I think the best trailers are the ones that communicate feeling and tone without describing too much of the plot. This has been my objective every time I have cut a feature film trailer. My Shadow is the fourth, and quite possibly my favorite.
What is My Shadow about?
“Robert, a painter, struggles with the sudden demise and grisly resurrection of his best friend - a Rabbit named Shadow. Now, all Robert wants to do is take the girl-next-door Sydney to the Jovial Halloween Ball and have a good time. But it’s hard to have fun when your best friend aspires to be a rock n roll singer and won’t stop eating the people you know.”
I was hoping to have My Shadow in the can, picture locked, and mixed for a sneak preview screening this year at Genreblast X at the Alamo Drafthouse in Winchester, VA, where we premiered Gouge Away back in 2022. But alas, there are still things that need to be shot - some second-unit stuff, miniatures, etc. There was just no way a cut would be ready in time.
Good things take time and are worth the wait! NO SHORTCUTS!!
The movie is just not ready.
To make up for this personal shortcoming, we will be having the world premiere of the trailer for My Shadow, along with the trailers for Mike Lombardo’s Dead Format and Treaters from Sable Griedel & Zane Hershberger, playing before The Barn Part III at this year’s Genreblast X, instead!
